Windows Defender
Windows Defender was originally a product called Giant. Microsoft bought their
antispyware product and now provides it free from their site. It is currently
considered a beta product (still in testing phases) but it is the same great program
that we have used for years. Windows Defender protects computers from spyware
and cleans any that may have already been installed and blocks unwanted popups.
We have used Windows Defender to find and remove programs that Spybot, AdAware and
ZoneAlarm all missed or were unable to clean.
Do not let the fact that this product is marked as beta deter you, Windows Defender
is essentially Giant with a new name. It has the same easy to use interface
and the same detection and cleaning abilities.
Windows Defender runs silently, it does not pester you with cluttered graphics nor
constantly tell you what it is doing (unless you actively check) and it does not
bog down your system.. In fact, the only ways to know it is doing anything
is to actually bring up the interface or if it detects something trying to install
itself without your knowlege, it will alert you.
