Avast! Antivirus
Awil (the maker of Avast!) provides their antivirus product free to home users,
and by "free" they do in fact mean free. No ads, no popups, no solicitations,
just simple quality antivirus protection. Avast! is one of the cleanest, quietest,
easiest to use and still thorough antivirus applications we have ever seen.
It routinely finds and removes viruses for us that both Symantec's Norton Antivirus
and McAfee miss. Also, as mentioned earlier, it is extremely non-intrusive
and does not bog down your computer unlike Norton or McAfee. A small icon
sits in your tray down by the clock to let you know it's running. Updates
are automatic and nearly invisible (a small box pops up to let you know that it
has updated and then goes away). It protects your computer, email (including
web based emails like hotmail, yahoo and gmail), instant messenger, P2P and web
surfing.
You must register on the Avast! site for your free subscription which is good for
one year and then must be renewed. In the two years we have been using and
reccomending Avast! we have never had one complaint about the company sending unsolicited
emails, nor have we had anyone stop using Avast! in favor of another product.
